Oprah’s Thoughts on Giving

Oprah Winfrey shared on Oprah.com, “What delights me most about the holiday season is that people are more open to giving and sharing. And actively thinking about how to spread more joy. There is no better feeling, for sure.” She continues to say, “I’ve been blessed with the ability to give really great gifts—everything from cashmere sheets to college educations. I’ve given homes. Cars. Trips around the world. The services of a wonderful nanny. But the best gift anyone can give, I believe, is the gift of sharing themselves.”

Not everyone has the resources to give like Oprah has, but we agree with her in that we believe the best gift anyone can give is sharing themselves. It doesn’t take money or fame to make a difference. You are enough. In another article she says, “What you put out comes back all the time, no matter what. This is my creed.” As a matter of fact, giving is even healthy for you. Simply contemplating generosity boosts your immunity. When Harvard students watched a film about Mother Teresa tending to orphans, the number of protective antibodies in their saliva surged; when the students were asked to focus on times when they’d been loved by or loving to others, their antibody levels stayed elevated for an hour. In another study, the brain’s pleasure centers lit up when people made check marks next to a list of organizations to which they wanted to donate. The motivation to give isn’t to make ourselves feel better, it just naturally happens. With all that in mind we want to share some news.

We are heading into an exciting time at Idle Tuesdays. In this upcoming year, we’ve decided to record one artist per quarter, for a total of 4 artists altogether. There is a lot to do and plenty of chances for people to get involved: helping plan welcome parties, assisting with recording sessions, planning listening parties for each artist as well as being apart of a film crew as we document the process. Saying all that we are still looking for people who have talents in social media marketing, marketing, writing blogs, web design, graphic design, public speaking, photography, videography, fund raising, event planning, leadership development, administration, mix engineering, recording engineering and more.

If you are looking to add some variety to your life and give yourself and some time to Idle Tuesdays, you can fill out a volunteer application at http://ow.ly/giJOl

Idle Tuesdays Recording Studio is a nonprofit organization seeking to elevate global culture, through music, by providing the means for positive, adult artists to record their music for free. It is our hope that these artists go on to become entertainment industry leaders and leverage their influence for good.
